Renewable Electricity by State

Comparisons and conclusions from the data

Understanding the Comparison

Two measurements are especially important in this dataset. Total generation shows the scale of renewable electricity production, while percentage change shows how quickly production increased in one year. Click either walkthrough below to highlight its states in the comparison table.

Walkthrough 1: Fastest-Growing States

Selected State Comparisons
State 2023 2024 Change

South Dakota9,43912,43231.7%
Florida17,18321,61525.8%
Texas149,285165,75311.0%

Arizona had the highest percentage increase at 44.6%. South Dakota followed at 31.7%, and Florida increased by 25.8%. This comparison shows which states changed most rapidly, rather than which produced the largest amount of electricity.

Arizona increased from 9,365 thousand MWh in 2023 to 13,546 thousand MWh in 2024. South Dakota added almost 3,000 thousand MWh, while Florida added more than 4,400 thousand MWh. Because the states began at different levels, their percentage changes are not determined only by the amount added.

Walkthrough 2: Scale Versus Growth

Click to Compare Texas and Arizona

Texas generated 165,753 thousand MWh in 2024, more than twelve times Arizona's total of 13,546 thousand MWh. However, Arizona's 44.6% growth rate was much higher than Texas's 11.0% rate. Texas therefore leads in total scale, while Arizona leads in recent percentage growth.

This difference is why the data should not be judged using only one column. A large state can add a major amount of renewable generation without having the highest percentage increase. A smaller producer can show a high percentage increase because it began with a lower amount in the previous year.

Overall Conclusion

The selected states generally increased their non-hydroelectric renewable electricity production between 2023 and 2024. The results do not identify one state as the leader in every way. Texas leads by total output, while Arizona leads by percentage growth. Looking at both measures gives a more complete understanding of the renewable electricity transition.
